In-depth analysis of wireless remote water meters and wired remote water meters

【 Summary 】 With the arrival of the era of intelligent remote transmission technology
With the arrival of the era of intelligent remote transmission technology, many fields have begun to layout the development of remote transmission technology. The water meter industry is no exception. Currently, there are two solutions for remote data transmission in the water meter industry: wired transmission and wireless transmission. From a literal perspective, it is simply the difference between wiring and not needing wiring, just using different methods for data transmission to solve the problem of household meter reading. So, from a scientific perspective, what is the fundamental difference between wireless remote water meters and wired remote water meters?
Wired remote water meters are based on wired cables and are often used in places where it is convenient to lay cables. Generally, wired remote meters are divided into three types according to communication methods: RS-485, M-BUS, and PLC. This type of remote water meter is relatively inexpensive, but it can be obstructed during construction wiring. Since it is a renovation of old communities, residents' homes have already been renovated, and wiring requires re-drilling holes, which residents are quite resistant to, making construction somewhat difficult.
Wireless remote water meters, on the other hand, are based on traditional measuring instruments and are equipped with a dedicated low-power transceiver module, such as the currently popular LORA technology and NB-IOT, to achieve wireless transmission of meter measurement data and other data, as well as command reception to execute corresponding command operations. Wireless remote water meters only communicate with the collector, and after the system is installed, the management collector of the meter is determined based on the installation and debugging situation of the collector. Once determined, it cannot be changed to ensure the unity and coordination of wireless communication management. However, due to the wireless transmission of data, wireless water meters may encounter various unstable factors such as data upload failures, so the stability of data transmission for wireless remote water meters is not as good as that of wired remote water meters.
From the above analysis, it can be seen that both wireless remote water meters and wired remote water meters have their own advantages, making it difficult to choose a clear winner between the two.
